Often what tells you the most about the forest is at your feet. Canada Mayflower, or Wild Lily-of-the-valley (Maianthemum canadense) is a small woodland plant with 2 or 3 leaves and small white flower. I should have saved this photo for the spring because that is when this blooms-but regardless if this small plant is found it indicates a healthy forest. I have seen this all over New York City’s forests, from Van Cortlandt Park to the Bloodroot valley in Staten Island.
